objectx

Objectx is a teaching and research initiative led by Adele and Alethea Alexander. It explores an inclusive, collaborative, feminist approach to moving with objects. In a 90+ minute practice, participants work in the studio with 10-30 ten-foot-long PVC pipes, exploring the generative potential of moving with objectx and building a movement vocabulary that arises out of function and real-time problem solving, not aesthetic design.

Objectx has been presented as a pedagogical practice towards decolonizing the academy at the Dance Studies Association conference (2021), as an embodied research initiative at the Sam Houston State University’s Scholarly Innovation Summit (2022), and as a creative tool at the Texas Dance Improvisation Festival (2022). Alethea + Adele have also led Objectx workshops for students at Sam Houston State University and the University of Washington, and they plan to continue developing this work as part of their creative, scholarly and pedagogical research agendas. You can read more about Adele + Alethea’s work together on their shared website: www.adeleandalethea.com

*Please note that we use the “x” in Objectx to indicate our intention to create a space actively committed to de-categorizing all bodies, organic or inorganic.
